This is such an underrated album that has some of Minnie's best solo work but remains obscure to the masses. Any ideas as to why it never took off? Charles Stepney''s compositions are ethereal and celestial. I stumbled upon the album when someone suggested Rainy Day in Centerville sounded like a Bacharach song about 15 years ago. I wish Minnie got to cover some Bacharach tracks and that Bacharach could have lent Dionne to Stepney to get a tailor made album like Come to my Garden.
Songs on the album like Close your eyes and remember take me to another world( seems that was the intention) The crescendo leading up to Minnie's faint whistles are just majestic.
Rainy Day in Centerville is the song that made me go in search of the album as it was said to sound characteristically Bacharach. The more i listen I don't hear it as much except for very limited sections but Stepney's productions match the elegance and complexity as he is a genius in his own rite. The instrumental solo has to be one of the best known to man.
only when im dreaming is another one of those wink and nods to Bacharach. Dont tell me you don't hear hints of DIonne listening to this. Charles Stepney doesn't adhere as closely to structure as Bacharach does so these songs veer off into foreign territory often sounding more mythical and ehtereal than they would have if intended to be made into a ready for radio single.
whenever whenever ethereal overload
Every song on the album is beautiful as many of you guys know but those are some of my personal faves.
