Smith were a blues/rock band who emerged in the late 60s and seemed unlikely candidates to take a Bacharach cover in to the US Top 5. I should imagine that their version was a bit too hard-edged for Burt's liking but at the same time I've never heard him complain about it, the record being such a huge hit. Incidentally, the lead singer Gayle McCormick sadly joined the celestial choir last month:

Smith's take on 'Baby It's You' wasn't a million miles away from how some of Bacharach's songs were 'reimagined' by Kyle Riabco in the recent West End show. Eight years ago I was in the audience at the Roundhouse when a young singer from Tottenham tackled the same song with great confidence, even taking the odd liberty with the melody. However, as good as she was I'm sure there was no one in the audience who would have predicted the extraordinary global success that awaited her in the years to come.

First, I apologize to you all as this is not related to Bacharach, David or Warwick. But, after reading about Ms. Warwick's current voice, I'd like to post Ms. Loretta Lynn (84 years young!) singing "Secret Love" (from 1953,"Calamity Jane", popularized by Ms. Doris Day):

"Secret Love" is from Ms. Lynn's absolutely spectacular new album, "Full Circle" featuring Elvis Costello (see! there's a Bacharach connection, sort of...) and Willie Nelson. For her years, Ms. Lynn sounds great, she is a national treasure.

Great rendition of a very 'underrated' Bacharach classic....

It`s still a mystery to me how these songs intended for Dionne`s second Warners album found their way to Stephanie Mills - of all people. She did a nice enough job but obviously struggled with some of them. It obviously wasn`t Burt`s idea because half these tracks weren`t arranged by him and Mills reported that he was never in the studio. Hal produced the album, which is why the classic credit for production featured his name first for the only time in their career. It`s been suggested that Dionne`s friendship with Mills might have been an influence but Dionne knew - and has said - that Mills was out of her depth doing these songs. Someone must know the story but it isn`t I.

BtoB has commented on this previously and, last I knew, he didn`t know the story either.
It just struck me that, since Burt was about to work again with Jackie DeShannon for the Together soundtrack, she would have been an inspired choice to record these songs. Why didn`t anyone think of that? She would have nailed every one of them.

Although I like Stephanie's renditions, Jackie would have been ideal.

Joanna Eden is an English jazz singer/pianist and teacher, one of her students being Grammy Award winning Sam Smith. She's featured on four tracks on the 4 CD box-set Simply Burt Bacharach, including Are You There. See and hear her perform Sam Smith's Stay With Me with definite Bacharach overtones:
