Hal David's Lyrics

Post by BB4LIFE »

Hey everyone. In tribute to the great Hal David who just recently celebrated his birthday as some of you have mentioned, I thought it would be cool to share some of your favorite lyrics that he has written. Obviously it can be a whole song, or just a few lines from a particular song, you guys call the shots. Be with so many great songs to choose from it is definitely tough. Especially since he is such a gifted man and can make us go that other world with his beautiful, yet simple lyrics. Here are a few of my favorites, sorry if I took some of yours, but it is my topic

Alfie- "When you walk, let your heart lead the way, and you'll find love any day."

A House Is Not A Home- "A chair is still a chair, even when there's no one sitting there, but a chair is not a house, and a house is not a home...." You guys know the rest :)

The Balance of Nature- "Day by day we search for love the way we all were born to do, not one by one, but two by two."

Oh man I have so many more but I want to see what everyone else has to say. Hope everyone is well and take care.

Come And Get Me

Post by Bruce Bernard Williams »

The lyrics to "Come And Get Me" by Jackie DeShannon are my favorite ones by the great Hal David. An excerpt:
I know what life has done to you,
Things haven't been too much fun for you,
That's why you went away.

This town isn't the town for you,
You like to be where the skies are blue,
And here the skies are gray.

Another song (also recorded by Jackie) is entitled "To Wait For Love". I believe that some of the lyrics go as follows:

I just called to let you know,
my bags are packed and I'm ready to go.

The above lyrics may not belong to "To Wait For Love" and if they belong to another song and if anyone knows, please advise.

One of my favourite Hal David lyrics..........

Until you find the love you've missed,
You're nothing..........Alfie..."

Thank You Hal !!!

the boys were on assignment to write a song for a somewhat
uninspiring, non-descript title - "Alfie"....and both were not looking forward
to it....
but out of it came one of the most brilliant songs of their career...
those last lines are great, Blue...

Here's another little line I like from Hal...
"maybe I'll do the things I dream, and not the things I see....
maybe i'll get to change the world, before it changes me..... "

LONG AGO TOMORROW..

Post by blueonblue »

Steveo,
I absolutely agree with you, "Long Ago Tomorrow" contains some of
Hal's finest lyrics.
Another line that sticks in my mind is from "The Windows Of The World"
"Everybody knows when men can not be friends their quarrel often ends
where some have to die......let the sun shine through....."

Today, these words seem more relevant than ever......

A difficult choice, but, my favorites are
Be Aware - "When there is so much, should anyone be hungry?"
Walk The Way You Talk - "Don't just stand alone on a mountaintop,
join the world today, do it right away"
and the one that says it all:
Lost Horizon - "Have you ever dreamed of a place far away from it all"
"there's a lost horizon where the sound of guns doesn't pound
in your ears, anymore"
Lyrics that were written over 30 years ago and that speak clearly to us all and, sadly, are even more timely today. This is the genius that is Hal David.

This is like trying to pick the best lines from Shakespeare. I have said, for so many years, that Hal is perhaps the most underrated genius in the music business. My mind is just spinning trying to come up with something because you can literally go into any of his songs and come up with fantastic gems.

I'll go with The Windows of the World, too, because it's such an exceptional lyric, even by Hal's standards:

"Whenever rain appears,
it's really angel tears,
how long much they cry,
let the sun shine through."

From "San Jose"

"Fame and Fortune is a magnet
it can pull you far away from home,
with a dream in your heart you're never alone.
Dreams turn into dust and blow away."

From the great Paper Mache:

"Twenty houses in a row
eighty people watch a TV show.
Paper people, cardboard dreams,
how unreal the whole thing seems."
