That's How Heartaches Are Made

Post by vincent.cole »

I was coming home Sunday from my wife’s cousin’s house and was listening to an old Goldie radio station and I hear this song, I have not heard since 1963! It was called, “That’s How Heartaches Are Made”! It’s from a singer name Baby Washington. I remember my older brother put the 45 on the record player and I fell in love with this song! I was trying to find out who produce and arrange this gem of a song from the 60’s! :D

The song sounds like something Burt Bacharach made or someone was drinking out of Burt’s Kool Aid!

I have attached 2 links. The other one is by the late great Dusty Springfield!

Give both of them a listen and you be the judge.

Yeah, Vincent, that's a great song -- and it does have a certain Bacharach sound to it -- at least the Bacharach sound of that period.

The song was written by Bob Halley and Ben Raleigh -- whoever they are. I'm not familiar with their work at all.

Bonjour mon ami, I remember when that song first came out. I was working at my dad's motel and they had jukeboxes in each room and I put a dime in and played it and was blown away! Several years later, I heard the Marvelettes' recording of this song and was blown away all over again. All these years I thought Van McCoy wrote this but I just read where Ben Raleigh was the composer. One of my all-time favorite songs was written by Ben: “Love Is A Hurtin' Thing” which Lou Rawls recorded for Capitol. I had the pleasure of hearing that song performed by Brenda Holloway at the Apollo in August, 1965—a most sterling performance! I'm still gonna double-check the Van McCoy story. Bon Soir.

Bonjour, In response to my own earlier post referencing the late Van McCoy as the one I thought wrote “That's How Heartaches Are Made” however it was another song I was thinking about entitled “When You're Young And In Love” also recorded by the Marvelettes. Another favorite of mine is Justine “Baby” Washington's “I Can't Wait To See My Baby's Face” released circa 1964 and later recorded by numerous others.

Vincent,

Two versions of "That's how Heartaches are Made", one female, one male (you don't hear too many male versions of this song):

Bette Midler, a truly gorgeous version, IMHO:

Paul Young (from his album of soul classics, "Reflections"):

Ms. Midler's version is from the same cd that includes her version of "God Give Me Strength":
