Krall cited for Pop Scene her favorite Elvis Costello albums. They included his 1977 debut, "My Aim Is True," and such landmark discs as "Imperial Bedroom," "King of America" and "Painted From Memory," his Grammy Award-winning 1999 collaboration with Burt Bacharach.

"They're all pretty great," Krall said. "What am I supposed to say? It's like asking: 'What do you like about Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell?' I'd admired Elvis for a while, because he would do a project like 'Almost Blue,' his (1980) country record, and then he would do something very different, like his (1999) album with Burt. I've always been attracted to people who you can't put into a box."
