R.I.P.—Kenny Rogers

Kenny Rogers passed away last night surrounded by family members. He was 81. Out of all of his many songs, my favorite one happens to be a Bacharach/David tune titled "They Don't Make Them Like They Used To". I remember thumbing through his book of collected photos of fellow musicians and seeing a glamorous Dionne Warwick. He told Burt and Carole to wear anything but white for the photo shoot—and what did they show up wearing?—white! My condolences to his family, friends, and his many fans.

Correction: On the above post, I credited Hal David as a co-author of the song. It was Carole Bayer Sager instead.

Recently a friend recommended Kenny Rogers and the First Edition's four-part harmony version of 'Cherish' as the best there is of the song and any doubts I may have had about his claim were soon quashed after finding it on YouTube.
