McCoy Tyner 1938 - 2020

Post by pljms »

I first became aware of the great jazz pianist McCoy Tyner when he was a member of John Coltrane's quartet in the 60s and tracks like their famous recording of 'My Favorite Things'. Many of us will recall that he recorded an album of Bacharach classics in the 90s featuring his trio and a symphony orchestra and here's one of the tracks.

I saw him at Fat Tuesday`s back when I could still afford to live in New York many decades ago. He was suis generis. Another irreplaceable talent is gone.

Almost sixty years after it was recorded the aforementioned 'My Favorite Things' has lost none of its hypnotic quality. McCoy Tyner was still only 21 when this track was cut and it was the way he voiced the chords in his extended solo that really drew me into the music when I heard it for the first time.
