lesser known 60's/70's Bacharach songs

Post by geoff85 »

I used to know a site where there were like thousands of Bacharach titles that he composed back in the 60's and 70's and over the years youtube has taken many of them down. Can we have a thread of some of the lesser known Bacharach songs. I will post one that may not be as obscure as some of the others many of you could probably post but for me I discovered it recently and I thought I knew all the Bacharach/ David/ Warwick songs from that era.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_WokxumNo8 Dionne Warwick I smiled yesterday.

Here; do yourself a favor:

Okay, maybe you missed this album from `75. It consists (apart from the covers) mostly of songs originally written for Dionne`s second Warner`s album but ended up - I still know not how - here.

Thanks so much Blair. What a wealth!! Too bad the book wont come with songs :D

I was never too keen on Stephanie Mills voice. This is how you know a singer is integral to the magic of a songwriters/composers essence. Her voice is borderline irritating(dont throw stones please if that is blasphemy to you) and all I can think is man Dionne would have killed this(kill= millenial way of saying hit it out the park).

Not blasphemy at all. I agree that her voice is thin and often forced. (Dionne commented later, "Nothing against Stephanie but those waters are deeper than they look").
This whole project, in fact, is a hive of unanswered questions in my mind.
First, why didn`t Burt offer these songs to (say) Jackie DeShannon with whom he was about to work again on two songs for the American version of the soundtrack to the utterly unknown Together? movie? (His comment on Mills a while later: "Was I excited about her as an artist? I thought she was good in that show {The Wiz}.)"
Second, why did Burt leave Hal to produce the album, himself never appearing in the studio according to a near-contemporaneous interview with Mills?
(Note that on the album cover the credits for production list Hal`s name before Burt`s - the one and only time during their collaboration).

Third, the above raises the possibility that Burt recorded the instrumental tracks in advance which he never did before. He certainly (according to the authoritative BtoB) had not pre-recorded them for Dionne`s presumptive sessions.
Bottom line, to me, to this day: WTF?
