Jazz great Nancy Wilson passed away at age 81 in California yesterday after a long illness. Affectionately called "Fancy Nancy", she considered herself as a song stylist—an interpreter of lyrics. Her first Grammy Award came in 1964 with "(You Don't Know) How Glad I Am", of which Bonnie Bramlett honored Nancy by recording it for inclusion on one of her albums. Nancy's records outsold Capitol Records' labelmates Frank Sinatra and Nat "King" Cole. I had the pleasure of meeting her at my dad's nightclub the "Off Beat" in OKC after one of her appearances. My dad and his friends were huge fans of hers and in every household, her records could be heard along with other jazz artists'. Nancy' has always been (and still is) one of my favorite jazz artists, thanks to my dad and his friends for turning me on to her music.

Yes, Nancy Wilson was a class act. She cut a number of Bacharach classics over her long career and this particular recording from the 60s I heard for the first time only about a year ago.

We have her two albums from the early 60s on which she collaborated with a couple of jazz greats, firstly pianist George Shearing and then alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley. From the album she made with Adderley and his band here's 'Happy Talk', in the days when albums of this nature could get into the US Top 40.

What a combination: Nancy Wilson, Bacharach/David, (arranger)Thom Bell.
Recorded live at Capitol Recording Studio, Hollywood, produced by Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff.
The MFSB Strings were brought to Hollywood to work with Miss Wilson.

Here she is singing Bacharach & David again and I'm sure not batting an eyelid over lyrics which are now considered by some to be outdated and decidedly non-PC.
