On My Own: sublime or turkey

Sometimes when I listen to On My Own I think it is Bacharach perfection ... and the next time it sounds like plop. Why is this?

I know as a songwriter(not famous) I have written some things in hindsight that turn out to be 'not so great"(to me)..and I understand that when people criticize, that they don't realize how difficult it is to write...but I'm not big on this song.....

OMG! It's one of my all-time favorites -- of Burt's or anyone's. I put it -- musically speaking -- on the level of pop genius. I will never tire of listening to it. If it weren't a #1 song for Michael and Patti, then it certainly was close. A monster hit song, I would say.

Also, a great song, blue. The intro alone pulls you right in. Burt's genius for composing such original and wonderful music will always astound me. Especially when you listen to the total shit that songwriters(?) get away with now.

Agreed, this is fine stuff. How did Burt manage to write so many truly special - but different - songs? No-one else comes close. PS Blue you never sent me that one!

It's one of many songs from Burt's "dumbed down to be marketable" period. Many are truly sublime, but they're more hooks than fully-formed songs -
Burt restraining himself but unable not to be a genius! Another that just blows me away is "Take Good Care of You and Me".

.... Think one would have to include "Love Power" on that list - right?
