Bacharach at the London Palladium, June 25th

Postby pljms » Sat Jun 18, 2016 6:59 am

Having already booked tickets for Bacharach's gig in early July at the Festival Hall featuring Joss Stone, I've now done the same for his show on June 25th at the London Palladium with Rumer, Marc Almond and Norma Jean Martine. Anyone else here going to either show or both?

On the basis that you can have too much of a good thing, I'm limiting myself to the Festival Hall show.

On the basis that you can never have too much of a good thing I'm going to both London shows. What swayed me and the missus to book the Palladium show as well was the venue itself (never been before) and the guest list.

The one big surprise of the night was the addition of Rick Astley to the guest list and he brought the house down with his powerful renditions of Make it Easy on Yourself and This Guy's in Love. With that remarkably strong baritone voice of his he's definitely Burt's kind of singer and you could tell he was bowled over by Astley's renditions. Rumer was perfect in both her numbers, The Balance of Nature and Close To You, while Marc Almond was nervous and unsure of pitch in Blue On Blue and I Just Don't know What To Do With Myself. For their rarity value alone as far as BB's concerts are concerned, It was good to hear Twenty Four Hours From Tulsa, Mexican Divorce and Something Big included in the set and they were all done beautifully by the regular singers. A packed Palladium theatre makes for a very special atmosphere and Burt seemed to enjoy the evening as much as everyone else. Roll on July 04th and the Festival Hall show with Joss Stone.

Screw that walking cloud of chloroform Rumer; I wish Joss Stone would make a Bacharach album. She has proved that she can do the tender as well as the soulful.

Yes, it felt like it was going to be a special show from the start and not even Marc Almond imploding in the middle of 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself' was going to spoil it. While Rumer was as self assured and on the money as you'd expect in her two songs, Rick Astley was truly a revelation. I really didn't believe he could sing as well as that. Norma Jean Martine was introduced by Bacharach as "someone I wrote a song with several years ago", and she performed the song nicely if a little nervily (hardly surprising in the circumstances). Although now 88 on the evidence of tonight I'd say Burt has a few more years of concert giving yet.

The Norma Jean Martine song is called I'm Still Here and though she and Bacharach wrote it in January 2015 (according to her Wikipedia page) its debut recording isn't due for release until September. It will be featured on her new album entitled Only In My Mind. I took to her and the song immediately as did, or so it seemed, most of the audience last night.

I was at this show at the Palladium. Really great, and the performance of two songs by Rick Astley was excellent and powerful. His voice perfect for Burt's music. Burt appeared genuinely pleased by Rick. They should make an album together.
