BLUE MAGIC: NEW OBSESSION OF THE MONTH

Post by geoff85 »

Man did i miss it all being born so late. I just love the soul musicians of the past its like magic came out of their mouths and fingers. I can imagine how they must have woooed ladies with those silky vocals and killer moves. These brothas were the shit( thats a compliment!!!)

spell(this song is just air water and magic)

just dont wanna be lonely( almost moved to tears when hearing this plus it reminds me of my dad who use to kill this on saturday mornings)

three ring circus

chasing rainbows (SAD beautiful song)

sideshow( best for last of course......and arent those dance moves killer?)

Blair I can always count on you to rub it in and make me feel worse. These choices are beautiful but my dad is a soul aficianado so I am not ignorant of these songs. One of my aunts was a choreographer and knew alot of the philly producers personally( bell huff gamble etc).

Soul gets alot of credit for its rythm and danceability but not enough attention is paid to "sweet soul" many of the songs rival Bacharach at his best. I would be hard pressed to find a bacharach song outside of southamerican getaway that has harmonies as ethereal as Blue Magic at their best.

Looks like alot of bacharach fans are not soul lovers seeing how my post is still emmpty. A shame if true.

Thanks for posting Geoff.
These songs possess a "special magic" that you just don't get nowadays.
"Sideshow" still sounds incredible after all these years....and always will.

I really like this reggae version:

and here’s a soulstress I just learned of. Don’t know much about her other than she’s English and has a great voice:

Linda Lewis? Boy have you missed out! I spent my whole teenage years idolising her!
Her best stuff is with Jim Cregan (ex-Faces and ex-her husband) and Alan Toussaint, who just died of course. Have a listen to her voice, and the orchestration, on her version of a Gilbert & Sullivan song:

Her pic on the cover's not bad, either

geoff85, I'm a big fan of this music. It's simply terrific and timeless! Gamble & Huff, and Bell are truly GREAT songwriters.

Did anyone post this one, which is one of my all-time favorites:

How about that arrangement? How about that bass player? James Jamerson would have been jealous no doubt.

And, by the way, try comparing the hits of today with those hits. 99% of the hit songs today are an embarrassment when compared to these great songs. I wish I could tell you why that is, but I can't explain it.
