to steveo_1965: yes reach out it was released both mono and stereo for sure since I have both versions of them
(found the vinyls in car boot sales time ago)

Gabba and MArtyn,
Its the guy who is on the very end towards us in the trumpet section to the cameras right,
in the taped (DVD) Canadian concert of about 72 or 73, and he is playing the lead on the introduction of ALfie....and he has that hair chopped down about halfway down his forehead.
Then Burt runs out and the orchestra plays Knowing When to Leave.

I do have a copy of that concert. Haven't seen it in a while so I'll take another look when I get the chance.

It would have been nice if a documentary could have been made, along the lines of the Classic Albums (eg Steely Dan's 'Aja' & Stevie Wonder's 'Songs in the Key of Life' - ) documentaries, on the 'Reach Out' album or the two follow-ups.

I've read about footage, from an early Chevrolet special, where Burt is taking an orchestra through its paces on the tune 'Nikki'. Not sure whether it was an actual recording session for his self-titled album or whether it was an orchestra put together for the special. And, unfortunately, despite an exhaustive search I've yet to find an available copy of the special. It would be magic to see this footage.

The trumpet player on the Canadian Dvd is indeed Warren Luening...he was the guy I was talking to.
I havent seen that Nikki thing in years, but I remember the segment...where some violin player(s) is flat on harmonics, and Burt yells at him "youre not in tune" or some such thing, and "have some respect for my daughter....."

Good news I got from the American federation of musicians one recording session July 18 1967 8pm to midnight for windows of the world (2 takes) are you there say a little prayer

All string players. erno is/was a violin player -ralph kramer is/was a cello player....
etc.booby helfer was the contractor.you can go on carol kayes site and match up the players,
but its a fairly small string section about 8 violins, several vlas and cellos..
good work .. it's a nicestart.

yes steveo 9 violin players two viola and two cellos ...they played for Frank Sinatra, Armstrong, Henry Mancini even for the Moonkes and Frank Zappa (Leonard Malarsky in Lumpy gravy)...skilled people in classical and jazz music basically

But I am not progressing with the brass players ...the archivist in LA told me that he found only one session registered for reach-out ...really weird: why the dropped to mention the other musicians?

Why the drop in information on the rhythm players,ww, and br?
because those pages are lost...if you look on the wrecking crew site you will see how these union contracts are collated...and the information given to you was the string page...
so i presume the other couple of pages are "lost"

yep Steveo I noticed that...I thought could be related to money, a "top secret" issue there

have you ever heard of Reg Guest? maybe he has played the sax in reach-out...

I was thinking that Burt might have used some of the musicians he did for the Casino Royale soundtrack...the two album are temporally close ...in that case Herb Alper could be the strongest candidate as trumpet player
he did play the trumpet in casino royale ...besides, playing free saving money for his own Record company makes sense to me

much better than Burt's album cuts on that tune, obviously patterned after Burts arrangement..the strings are so etherial and glassy...perhaps the sexiest record ever made!but I don't think Reg played on Reach out..
this was a Hollywood Group....and as such, I think perhaps Warren Luening is the closest
candidate...for trumpet. On sax could be any of the Hollywood sidemen...BUT probably the ones Burt had used before in L.A. perhaps some of the Spector Wrecking crew..Also ruminations in my mind! : )

This Reg Gust is mentioned in the M. Brocken book on Bacharach (page 193)...I guess you have it

When I was listening more carefully to the album I said to myself: the sax sounds like Stan Getz and honestly I thought it was him playing...of course anybody well trained and skilled can imitate that getzzy sound ..besides, I have a record of Getz covering Bacharach (What the World Needs Now - Stan Getz Plays Bacharach and David) released just a year later 1968 so the idea was not so insane

Brocken writes : saxophonist Reg Guest leans far too far towards plagiarizing Stan Getz

So I made the possibile connection between the two

is higly unlikely that Reg Guest would be appearing on that session...since he is/was from
G. Britain.
