Dionne Warwick First Christmas CD and Concert

Post by warbachavid »

The eighth season of arts and entertainment from the R. Don Cowan Fine and Performing Arts Center at The University of Texas at Tyler is upon us.

Cowan Center Director Susan Thomae-Morphew announced the center's 2004-2005 schedule of events on Friday and thanked area sponsors for their support.

"Every year I think it's a little better and a little better because of the support we get from the community," Ms. Thomae-Morphew said.

The center will offer different series of events throughout the year under the theme of "Laugh, Leaps and Legends," including performing arts, Broadway shows, music and distinguished speakers. Season tickets go on sale June 21.

Headliners for this season's opening night Oct. 2 are comedians Tim Conway and Harvey Korman, who will perform solo stand-up routines and several skits, some of which are from "The Carol Burnett Show."

The performing arts series will include a production of "A Tuna Christmas," a sequel to the comedy "Greater Tuna," about the antics of the citizens of a small Texas town.

One bigger-than-usual production performing on March 11, 2005, is "Miss Saigon," a musical about two lovers who are "torn apart by the fortunes of destiny and held together by a burning passion." The production requires seven trucks for the set and props, whereas most shows that perform in the center require only three.

A touring production of a very well known Broadway musical, "Cats," will be performed on Sept. 22. Ms. Thomae-Morphew said the show would be excellent for families and children.

Singer Dionne Warwick will perform "Solid Gold Christmas" on Dec. 11 in which she will sing holiday tunes, as well as some of her biggest hits, backed by a full band.

Bob Scheiffer , a 30-year CBS News anchor and Washington correspondent, and John Stossel, ABC News "20/20" co-anchor, will visit the center as part of the distinguished lecture series.

Ms. Thomae-Morphew said the center has been planning this year's events for some time, and she wanted to thank everyone in the community who sponsored the center.

"We're moving forward getting the arts to elevate our culture," she said.
