Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

Yes Sara, 'Knowing When to Leave' is a definitive Bacharach and David song if ever there was one and although from my experience people tend to love the song it was perhaps a little bit too 'different' to ever be a chart hit for anyone. Several years ago I came across a version by Vikki Carr from on...

Re: Make The Music Play: Black America Sings Bacharach and D

Another track from this fine collection: Ruby and the Romantics' beautifully arranged and sung version of 'I Cry Alone'.

Yes Mark, all samples bar the vocals! Until last week I'd never heard of Koop and now I look forward to discovering more of their music.

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

I suppose most of us have had well-meaning friends knowing of our love of Bacharach’s music play us tracks that they consider Burt-like which to our ears sound only vaguely like him at best or nothing like him at all. A couple of days ago I was in a friend’s car and she put on this CD track saying, ...

Dionne Warwick on French TV circa '67. I've not heard this for a while so it sounded very fresh on this morning's 'Sounds of the 60s':

Re: Lou Johnson

Thanks for that, Vincent. It's a real shame that both 'Always Something There to Remind me' and 'Message to Martha (Kentucky Bluebird)' failed to be major hits for Lou Johnson as I think they're the best versions. Here he is with a Bacharach/David rarity which became very popular on the Northern Sou...

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

Talking of J. Webb, it was terrific to hear Thelma Houston's 'Everybody Gets to Go to the Moon' on BBC Radio 2's 'Sounds of the 60s' this morning. An extraordinary performance of an extraordinary song and an instant 'standard' without ever becoming a chart hit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvhF855...

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

A version by Kelly Garrett of a beloved B&D song that I've not heard before and which sounds like it was recorded around the time the song first became known. We await probably the two best versions of this tricky song by Sue Raney and Gordon MacRae appearing on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/w...

Valentine's Day Bacharach Tribute Concert in London

This show with virtually the same people involved played at the Cadogan Hall a couple of years ago and also featured on BBC Radio's 'Friday Night is Music Night' a few months ago:

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

Thanks Blue for posting what's probably the highlight of BB's 'Lost Horizon' TV special, that and the rehearsal and chat that preceded it. Sadly, I can't see the TV specials ever getting an official DVD release so try going on the IOffer site and looking out for any pirate DVD copies, if you haven't...

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

It makes me smile to think, Paul, that the super sophisticated 'Out of My Continental Mind' was published just a few months after 'Three Wheels On My Wagon', proving that Bacharach has always had the wherewithal to write in any popular music idiom if he gets the commission or if the mood takes him. ...

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

A real anomaly in Bacharach's output is 'Out of My Continental Mind' as he wrote nothing else remotely like it. One of the few songs of his which had lyrics by Sydney Shaw, it was originally recorded by Lena Horne and went on to be covered by Ernestine Anderson in 1963 and in the 90s by the English ...

Re: Burt and Angie in 1970

Yes Blue, I'm pretty sure it is the original MCA and A&M tracks they're 'playing' to. That's the trouble with these TV specials from the 60s and 70s - things are often not quite how they seem at first glance. Having vocalists lip-synch is one thing, getting highly trained orchestral musicians to...

Re: Burt and Angie in 1970

I've had this show on DVD for a few years and it's amazing to discover that all of it's now on Youtube. It's worth watching for the duet between Burt and Angie of 'I'll Never Fall in Love Again' alone (30 minutes in) and watch Burt squirm when he messes up the "pneumonia-phone ya" rhyme by...

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

Probably little chance of that ever happening , Blue. Outside of 'Futures' and 'Raindrops', the only other item from the Edmonton concert available on Youtube at the moment is 'Charlie' sung by Sally Stevens. As we all know, she & Bacharach go back a long way and for example hers was the high so...
