Re: 100 Reasons the Beatles Suck

Step Inside Love, not one of McCartney's best efforts...sorry don't hear Bacharach. The Beatles were a great pop band, no doubt about it and wrote some really great and compelling tunes that have stood the test of time. They also wrote some tripe, as Bacharach did, as Michael Jackson did, etc. This ...

Re: "Finder of Lost Loves" version Warwick/Vandross released

Those of us who were around in 1984-1985 may recall that the tune "Finder of Lost Loves" was from the Aaron Spelling produced television series of the same name and Dionne and Luther did indeed perform the tune for the title track of the series. For whatever reason, the tune was rerecorded...

Re: Cilla

To be realistic and frank, I doubt any cable outlet or network in the USA will pick this up as Cilla Black is an unknown in the USA except to a handful of expats who live in the USA now. More likely to appear on demand on Amazon Prime, Netflix, et al. Highly doubt even BBC America would air it in th...

Re: 100 Reasons the Beatles Suck

Elvis's Cold Kentucky Rain was a brilliant recording and one of the few from his later era that wasn't phoned in IMHO. As for his early work, he imitated other Rockabilly and blues artists but they were superb imitations in my opinion and I recognize them as just that. The hype far exceeded the subs...

Re: 100 Reasons the Beatles Suck

My favorite series of albums ever. Ella could do it all. I never get tired of listening. The first recording I remember falling in love with as a child was an old, old 78 RPM recording of Ella singing A-Tisket, A-Tasket on the Decca blue label which I had found in my grandparent's attic. I still hav...

Re: 100 Reasons the Beatles Suck

Andy Williams and Carmen McRae are woefully underrated along with Dionne Warwick. Andy could sing anything and do it well. Carmen McRae and Dionne Warwick share a lot of vocal similarities to my ear. Another favorite of mine is Ella Fitzgerald who was criticized for being "too white" and t...

Re: 100 Reasons the Beatles Suck

Second and third most overrated?? My vote would go to Mr. Frank Sinatra and Ms, Aretha Franklin. Sinatra was always a mediocre vocalist who had the best producers working with him and who always made his seem much better than he really was...Aretha Franklin sang some things well but she was the 1960...

Re: Dionne's 23-Song Medley

More than an informed opinion, my friend. Aretha and Dionne Warwick dominated popular music in the sixties more than any other female solo performers. And, there were no male solo vocalist counterparts to Dionne and Aretha for consistency on the charts, particularly Dionne. Aretha, if you study her ...

Re: Dionne's 23-Song Medley

Face...Dionne was huge in the 1960s and folks want to tend to minimize that or marginalize that by comparing that to her 80s career...younger folks who weren't there at the time just don't realize how truly big she was then but even critics, DJs and other performers knew she with Bacharach and David...

Re: Dionne's 23-Song Medley

Dionne's concerts are much shorter these days. She generally performs for about an hour, sometimes a little longer, these days versus an average of an hour and a half plus to sometimes two hours in her heyday. I attended many concerts in 1976 where she performed over two hours after she came back fo...

Re: What's new pussy cat?

Burt wrote in his autobiography "Even though my relationship with Dionne was always strictly professional, she also wasn’t crazy about me being with Angie. While we were in London, the two of us went to see Dionne at the Savoy and she walked out onstage wearing a blonde wig and I thought, ‘What...

Re: What's new pussy cat?

Burt spent a great deal of time with Dionne unlike the others you mentioned. Dionne was employed by Burt's production company and Burt had a vested interest and had made a huge investment in Dionne. Perhaps Angie resented that; all conjecture on my part but Angie's apparent resentment was motivated ...

Re: What's new pussy cat?

Interesting letters. In reading a couple, one was from the time when Burt was in London writing the score for "What's New Pussycat" in 1965 shortly before he and Angie married on May 15, 1965 and in it she is discussing with her friend Laura Hart, a voice teacher Angie took elocution lesso...

Re: Dionne's Stage Show

Yes it was recorded at the Copa in 1968. She appeared at the Copa for a couple of weeks and used that medley specifically in her show there...that is the only time I am aware of where she used that. I recall that Frank Sinatra, Burt Bacharach, Angie Dickinson, Shirley MacLaine and Warren Beatty, Dus...
