Re: most beautiful haunting melodies you ever heard?

The theme from the Good Son which is a very heart wrenching movie of a troubled child who dies when his mother lets go of his hand and he falls off a mountain to his death after she chooses to save another boys life instead. This is the song that plays after that happens. I was a little kid myself w...

Re: most beautiful haunting melodies you ever heard?

How about this one? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtWTUt2RZh0 This song was sampled in coldplays talk. I think there version shows the real haunting beauty of the melody. It is way too lost in the 80s dance theme in the original. I have posted alot of Coldplay in this thread already and think all ...

Re: most beautiful haunting melodies you ever heard?

A memorable melody, lyrics and performance, Miss Shirley Horn (with John Williams and the Boston Pops Orchestra, arranged by the great Johnny Mandel), "Here's To Life": http://youtu.be/QOj1JryGj8A This song had alot of potential to be haunting. However the whole thing was way too meanderi...

who did it better?

In the golden days sometimes a good song was often covered by many artists this thread analyzes which artist put the best stamp on it. I will start off with one of my favorite Bacharach tracks. "Look in my eyes Maria". While it wasnt a huge hit itself it was covered very nicely by two arti...

Re: most beautiful haunting melodies you ever heard?

I first heard this Marvin Hamlisch /Johnny Mercer song about 43 yrs ago. It has "haunted" me ever since. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4UKhB8qacc "blue" blue, you might get a kick out of this: (If the video doesn't show and, instead, you see a big exclamation point, hit your ...

Ken Miller wrote:The most haunting melody I've ever heard? So many, but this one comes to mind.

When i was a kid some about the french romantic expressionist sound really grapped me. From Ravel, Debussy, Satie, Chopin some of the most beautiful sounds ever produced.

Modern music alert. Chillingly haunting song from Paramore named Decode.

it was performed on American Idol and sounded even more haunting. She is one of the finalists in the finale tonight.

Re: most beautiful haunting melodies you ever heard?

Re: Best lyricists of all time?

Blair, I think you would really like Rupert Holmes' songs. He has more in common with the pre-rock era songwriters. His albums, except for Widescreen are hard to find but you can hear a lot on YouTube. His musical, The Mystery of Edwin Drood is marvelous too. Please do post something noteworthy. Al...

Re: most beautiful haunting melodies you ever heard?

geoff85, Here's a version of Carly Simon's "That's The Way I've Always Heard It Should Be", a duet by Jack Jones and (his real life lady, at that time) actor Susan George: http://youtu.be/bytdDoyedts I can do without Susan George and her disney broadway inflections. Having said that I lik...

Re: most beautiful haunting melodies you ever heard?

This song i have always found chillingly hauntingly. Its rare to write a pop song in a minor key? I think this is Carly Simon at her best with the way it should be.

Re: Best lyricists of all time?

I have often heard Joni's name pop up when best of songwriters are discussed. Alot of her songs are very free form and lack memorable melodies imo but she did get a few songs really right. Help me comes to mind i heard it first as a child and hunted it down years later on my own. https://www.youtube...

Re: Best lyricists of all time?

I think a familiar and understandable error has seeped in with the conflation of pre- and post- rock era lyrics. The two "sets" if you will are not comparable in either craft or intention. Gershwin, Rodgers/Hart, Lerner/Loewe were not doing what Mariah Cary or Beyoncé does Are Jagger/Rich...
