Re: any news about "Gift of the Magi"

I`m still hoping to hear something that will blow me away like the Painted From Memory material did. So far, "Some Lovers" and "Welcome to My World" are pretty good, "This Christmas" is so-so, and "Every Other Hour" and "Just Walk Away" don`t work at...

Re: any news about "Gift of the Magi"

I`m sorry, but "Come In Ogni Ora" is a lazy bore, was not written for the show, and should be stricken now. It makes no more sense than the insertion of "I Say a Little Prayer" into "Promises..." I still think Some Lovers can be a hit, `though, but only if the score alb...

Re: any news about "Gift of the Magi"

Passing over the question of how these two characters of (at best) modest means can afford a room at the Plaza, I wonder how commercial a tragic, slow-motion break-up will seem. I once read a column in which a writer speculated how much more cynically apposite "Promises..." would have been...

The Road to Midtown...

...from San Diego is long. I`m not sure (having not been in California for roughly forty years) that there`s even a single inter-state route. I do know that "Some Lovers", regardless of preview notices, has a rough time ahead so I`m offering the following suggestions: 1. Record and release...

Re: Magi Opening Wednesday

I, too, hope that this is a huge success. I like the songs I have heard to date - both of them. If all 23 or so have made it into the show, it seems like more of an opera or oratorio than a standard musical, `though and I worry. Broadway is a very different animal now than forty years ago and two ne...

Re: does Burt do non-Burt music?

I believe Burt played a few bars of "Didn`t We' behind Richard Harris on the ABC Shangri-La special, but I can`t think of another instance off-hand.

Re: any news about "Gift of the Magi"

Now, the question is: Are they going to record this score now or wait until after the Broadway premiere?

Re: Disappointing "Women Who Rock"

B to B: I had never heard the "Atlantic Hypothesis" before. Is it that the overwhelming cachet of hipness the label once exuded made the non-Atlantic-signed Dionne an untouchable? Or did the long arm of Ahmet Ertegun shunt her aside? Either way, I still don`t believe election to this or an...

Re: Burt and politics

I suspect/hope he feels the way most did who, without reading candidate Obama`s speeches, voted for him with such naive enthusiasm.( It was with similar hope that I voted for McGovern in `72 but obviously with different results). In `08 I voted for Ralph Nader and so have been able to watch this sor...

Re: Ry Cooder - Mexican Divorce

My problem with this is identical to the objection I had to Laura Nyro`s version of Be Aware. In each instance the singer improvised a new melody. In Ry`s case, I suspect, because he couldn`t sing the original; in Laura`s because, well, that was Laura (It was also a demo. It`s possible, although unl...

Re: Interview : Nikki Jean

Thanks, Marcel; I love this woman.
Here`s an interview she herself posted this week. It was conducted just before her performance at S. O. B.`s not long ago:

I`d like to interrupt my own customary crabbing to aver how heartwarming it is to see all these people again. Jackie and Lani look particularly good.

Re: Fool Killer

This is one of those beguiling melodies with which I suspect Burt surprised even himself. Like "In Tune", "Don`t Say I Didn`t Tell You So", "Come and Get Me" it was recognisably Bacharach yet somehow "noir-ish'."

Re: Lost Horizon to DVD on October 4

In a radio interview from `77 discussing Futures, Burt introduces "No-One Remembers..." as being written by him with Hal "after we started talking and writing" again. So, why did this ( and presumably the others in the batch) not resolve the lawsuits among the two, Dionne and War...
