Re: Who's Got the Action - Phil Colbert

Love it. I'm not surprised that this has long been a favourite with the Northern Soul community here in the UK. Below is a remarkably positive review from this month's Record Collector Magazine of the compilation 'Who's got the Action' has just been re-issued on: Rare Bacharach: The Early Years 1958...

Re: Andrew Lloyd Webber's health

I agree, pljms, especially as the news is all over the media anyway. A post about ALW's music in relation to BB's would be more appropriate for these pages, although I've yet to meet a Bacharach fan who's especially fond of Lloyd Webber's music. I know I'm not!

Re: Promises Promises back to Broadway.

I saw the London production too - three times! Yes, it was great that 'Tick Tock Goes the Clock' was included as it's so typical of the type of thing Bacharach was writing in those days, with time and key changes tumbling all over the place. Within the context of the show, 'Knowing When to Leave' an...

Re: Discussion Board is STale

Well, the word 'stale' with a capital t certainly seems to have inspired everyone. The point made about how it's easy to tire of the big hits while retaining a love for the so-called '2nd division' songs is something I can relate to totally, and not just with Burt's songs. I suppose because they wer...

Re: The Look of Love

I heard the show. I thought poor old Jonathan Cohen made a right dog's breakfast out of trying to explain what the song is doing musically. He's obviously not over familiar with the song and anyone with an ounce of musicality will know that when the song goes in to the major key for the chorus (&quo...

Re: What Love Can Do

I don't know how big or small BB's contribution to this song was but almost two years after the first hearing it still sounds like it's a 100% Brian Wilson composition to me.

Re: "Look In My Eyes Maria".....Cliff's version !!!

Thanks for the link. Cliff singing 'Everyone Needs Someone to Love', one of only three recordings of the song, is a real rare gem and I was lucky enough to stumble on it purely by chance in the mid-70s when rooting about in a box of old records in a charity shop. I didn't then and still don't routin...

Re: Burt to appear....

Unusual for Burt to play Spain. It would be even more of a rarity if he played in France or Germany, where his profile is very low. I know because I visit both those countries on business and for pleasure a few times every year and it's rare that I see a Bacharach CD in the racks of the big music st...

Re: Burt in Rotterdam

Fantastic pictures of a remarkably intense performance. Trijntje Oosterhuis's nervous tension is there for all to see - remember that men sweat but only ladies are allowed to perspire! If I'd been there on the night I would have been disappointed that she joined BB on stage for only three numbers.

Here's a couple of Youtube videos, pljms, taken from Saturday night at the North Sea Jazz Festival showing that Trijntje Oosterhuis did indeed make an appearance with BB! Who'll Speak for Love is followed by Waiting for Charlie to Come Home: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_htYG3vmVk http://www.yout...

Re: Tony Hatch 'Britain's Burt Bacharach' is 70 today

I listened to all 3 shows of the radio series and thought it was a bit of curate's egg - only good in parts - and I didn't find out much that I didn't know already. Sadly, Jackie Trent's imput was small and taken from the archives, hardly surprising, I suppose, given their apparently acrimonious spl...

Re: The Look of Love

My personal favourite Bacharach & David song and probably the sexiest marriage of lyric, melody and chord sequence there's ever been. The lyrics read like it should be a man's song to a woman but most if not all the most effective versions I've heard have been recorded by women, Dusty Springfiel...

Thanks, Dennis, for pointing us in the direction of Lazy Day which with all those major 7th chords is obviously very like Bacharach - well, he never denied the influence!

Re: Tony Hatch 'Britain's Burt Bacharach' is 70 today

Yes, I have the album and I have to say it's a bit of a mixed bag, with some of Hatch's arrangements not really coming off. Returning to songs written by Tony Hatch, my 5 personal favourites virtually pick themselves: 1/ Don't Sleep in the Subway 2/ Call Me 3/ Downtown 4/ Where are you now 5/ I coul...

Re: Tony Hatch 'Britain's Burt Bacharach' is 70 today

Part 2 of a documentary series on BBC Radio 2 about Tony Hatch is on air at 7pm this Friday. In this show, postponed from last Friday due to You-Know-Who's death, he talks about being called 'Britain's Burt Bacharach'. Here's a tv excerpt from last year featuring Tony accompanying Petula Clark on th...
