Re: 'Blue Umbrella'..'We Go Way Back'...'Whistling in the Dark' ..'Bacharach / Tashian

With these songs (particularly for me, the title track) and Bridges, Burt is back - intentionally or not beginning to atone in a major way for the B-S years.

Re: 'Midnight Watch' ...new Bacharach / Tashian song.

This is a controversial opinion, but I think that Carole was the worst influence on Burt. Yes, pop music had changed by the eighties, but he should have let her write lyrics while he went ahead and composed the way he always had done. Does anyone think - seriously - that stuff like "Love Power" is a...

I didn`t want to be the first to say that, but I agree.

Re: 'Midnight Watch'

Can someone tell me what Tashian`s claim to fame is? He`s a good singer but until this project I had never even seen his name in print.

For Those Who Never Saw It...

...here`s the (semi)- live performance of "I Don`t Need You Any More" from a US late night show in `80. The vocals and keyboards are live but it`s the recorded orchestral backup.

Why, for godssake, didn`t Burt work more with Jackie?

Re: 5 new songs by Burt Bacharach & Daniel Tashian

My initial reaction was, "Nice, but nothing special" but after a few listens I loved it. I hope the rest are this good.

Re: First released recording of 'Knowing When To Leave'

I share your cousin`s opinion.
I`ll never understand why that song was substituted for the melodically superior and lyrically wittier, "Let`s Pretend We`re Grown-Ups."

Re: First released recording of 'Knowing When To Leave'

Paul, thanks for reminding me of Michele Lee. I always thought that she was beautiful and recall her singing this on The Ed Sullivan Show. (Too bad there`s no video clip). Although the opening bars of this arrangement scared me into thinking that I was about to hear Neil Diamond`s "Cracklin` Rosie",...

Re: First released recording of 'Knowing When To Leave'

While I agree that she has a pleasant voice and she certainly was attractive, I can`t say that I like this version any better then Karen Carpenter`s.
But that`s just a matter of taste.
The real question is how she got to record it when she did.

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

Before I kvetch, let me say that I liked Carpenters albums in general. Richard was a sympathetic (re)arranger of Burt`s compositions and not a bad writer himself. But Karen`s bland, sexless vocal here completely misses the point of the song. She`s just reading notes. It`s really (to my ears) just aw...

I don`t know, blue. Until the chorus, it strikes me as sounding like an unused theme for a James Bond movie.

Bloodied But Unbowed

I once had occasion to state the names of two singers to whom I would listen, even if I disliked the song(s) being sung. One was Carmen MacRae; the other , Andy Williams whose Columbia out-takes have recently been issued on Real Gone/Columbia. It`s been a long time since I`ve listened to Andy and I ...

Re: Waltzes

Let`s not forget this chestnut. It was a huge hit for, I believe, Jane Morgan. But everybody and his dog covered it. This arrangement for Anna Maria Alberghetti is a bit treacly but it`s the original version from the Broadway musical Carnival. When it was made into a movie (re-titled Lili), Leslie C...
