Re: reaction to last night's PBS program

Yes, I enjoyed Rumer's performance as well. She has a lovely tone to her voice and the priceless gift of being able to communicate emotionally without straining too hard and by just sticking to the melody. She's obviously a woman of taste because she was on BBC TV last week performing a Jimmy Webb s...

Re: Two new Bacharach-related releases...

I received the German language CD the other day and I thinks it's terrific. It's curious how listening to these songs in a different language can often make you spot things in the melodies that maybe you'd started taking for granted or just weren't 'hearing' any more due to over familiarity. All the...

Re: Bobbie Gentry BBC radio doc

Yes, her biggest British hit was dealt with with almost unseemly haste and with the song only heard in the background. However, it was a fascinating show and it has already led me to look to see just what CDs of hers are available at the moment. She was a special talent for sure and it's just a sham...

Re: BBC4 'Bacharach Night'

The video compilation show veered from the sublime (Aretha with The Sweet Inspirations) to the, well, let's just say less sublime (The Stranglers). Having Gwen Guthrie's 'Close to You' as well as the Carpenters' version was a waste and I'm sure the BBC must have dozens of superior performances of 'W...

Re: Another great song that sounds like Bacharach

Interesting subject and I'm pretty certain that BB would have been proud to have composed songs like 'If We Lived on Top of a Mountain', 'Where Are You Now', 'Girl Don't Come' and 'Get Out of My Life'. Phyllis Nelson's 80's UK hit 'Move Closer' definitely owed a lot to BB, something that more than a...

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

Not being a fan of Tony Parsons I missed Bacharach's extraordinary appearance on his show that night, although I was aware of it the following morning because people were talking about it at work. Fantastic to see it at long last. As for Rumer and Sandie Shaw, what an unexpected pleasure. Trains and...

Re: "Three Wheels on My Wagon"

The recording on that Youtube video is by the New Christy Minstrels (lead vocalist Barry 'Eve of Destruction' Mcguire). This was a big radio hit in the UK in the mid-60s and also got to No.1 in our EP chart! Bacharach often mentions 'Three Wheels on My Wagon' when it comes to his 'worst' songs, but ...

Thanks for DW video, Sara. I remember hearing Who Gets the Guy when it came out and not thinking a lot of it. I appreciate it a lot more now! Here's Dionne again giving a fine concert rendition from 1989 of a much later Bacharach classic, On My Own:

Re: Cissy Houston

I echo the comments above re Cissy and Whitney Houston. I've always liked Cissy Houston's very R'n'B version of 'I Just Don't Know What to do With Myself'. This clip is a live TV performance of the song from around 1970.

Re: Ronan Keating in the Studio with Burt

As with any album of Bacharach songs, the role of the arranger is almost if not just as important as the vocalist(s). Too true, pljms, and much more important than a mere producer! Listening to the album I wish Bacharach had forsaken his role as co-producer and dedicated himself exclusively to arra...
