Re: Bacharach a subject on BBC's Mastermind

The question doesn't state that DW recorded the demo in '63, merely that the Merseybeats had their UK hit with the song that year. According to Serene Dominick's book DW's demo was recorded in '62.

Re: Bacharach a subject on BBC's Mastermind

I've now added the contestant's wrongs answers in brackets after the questions in the post above.

Yes, the name of the basketball team is the obvious one.

Re: Bacharach a subject on BBC's Mastermind

He did indeed get question 13 wrong, although I think by that time his concentration was in tatters. His answer to that and a few of the other questions showed that his knowledge of BB's career was sketchy at best and I should imagine that everyone who visits this forum knows that the song he though...

Re: Bacharach a subject on BBC's Mastermind

I've very slightly shortened a few of the questions. The contestant's wrong answers are in brackets after the questions: 1) In what city was BB born? - Kansas 2) What was the title of the first song that BB wrote, a collaboration with a fellow student while at university in Montreal? - Night Plane t...

Bacharach a subject on BBC's Mastermind

Did anyone else here from the UK see BBC TV's Mastermind last Friday evening? One of the five contestants took 'The Life and Music of Burt Bacharach' as their specialist subject and had 90 seconds to answer about a dozen questions. Sadly the young(ish) man in question didn't exactly cover himself in...

Re: "With a Smile"

Lovely song and I dont blame BB for plagiarizing himself! Yes, pljms, the refrain, "Wait & see and then in a little while", in 'With a Smile' has the same chord sequence and virtually the same melody used a few years later for the line, "Unwrapping presents that I should have sent...

Re: Promises Promises Review

Good to see I wasn't the only one to baulk at that statement by Clive Barnes! Like pljms, I can remember how in the UK in the mid-60s Bacharach was being revered almost like a classical composer because of the complexity of his songs and arrangements. A quote from that time by Anthony Newley that Ba...

Re: An article about "Promises, Promises"

Oh dear. As soon as I heard that 'I Say a Little Prayer' was going to be included I suspected that the producers wouldn't be able to keep their fingers off the panic button and that eventually more Bacharach & David hits would follow it in to the show. So after 'A House is Not a Home' what next?...

Re: There is a German town called "Bacharach "!

Thanks for the info, GehVorbie. It's a bit of a distance from where I stay but I do remember visiting that store once, but as I was on a mission to look for several classical CDs for my father (classical section was in the basement as I remember) I don't think I even had time to visit the other sect...

Re: There is a German town called "Bacharach "!

As I'm visiting Berlin once again after Easter, Perhaps GehVorbie would be kind enough to give me the name of this miraculous shop with no less than 12 BB CDs. If you can't remember the name just let me know what district it's in as I know my way around after more than 30 visits. Thanks.

Re: There is a German town called "Bacharach "!

You're so right, pljms. I visit Germany on busines several times a year and have found exactly the same thing. Mind you, Switzerland's just as bad. As far as Europe goes, the cult of Bacharach appears to be strongest in the UK, Italy and Holland.

Re: Promises, Promises

Thanks, Vincent, for posting Hal David's piece here. I've always got the impression that his attitude towards the show over the years has been a bit more positive than BB's and it was he and not Burt who was at the first night of the London fringe production of 1996. If the 2010 model of PP is a gre...

Re: Promises, Promises

It's been nearly 14 years since this production played on the London fringe, but I know for sure 'Tick Tock Goes the Clock' was in the first half, probably early on and possibly following 'Half as Big as Life'. It was a big production number featuring three female singer/dancers. I fell in love with...

Re: Promises, Promises

I agree that as soon as 'hits' are added to a score then a show loses its integrity, and I'm dismayed that the producers have decided to include I say a Little Prayer in the new Broadway production of Promises Promises. I saw the 1996 London fringe production of PP that pljms alludes to in his post ...
