I have a Belgian friend (for all those non-EU folk, Belgium is next to France and has unspeakably good beer and desserts). He tells me that there is a town there called Hazebrook - which some people spell Hazebrouck. This depends on whether you are french or flemish-speaking (these are the two lang...

Thanks everyone, fascinating. The overriding impression seems to be a place hardly worthy of "throw some things in a grip..... take the early train; it's a beautiful trip.... don't forget the name" As an aside, is the Bacharach: Song by Song book worth it?; it's not available here in the ...

So does Hasbrook Heights really exist somewhere? Is it worth a visit?!

Hasbrook Heights

Has anyone else spotted this little gem hidden in the mists of Bacharachland?

Is it true that Bob James had a hand in it?

Glad to hear I'm not the only one. I have a seven year old daughter who knows every word of Riverboat (although not exactly their meaning!). The whole song is so evocative - It's July on the river, 95 in the shade... - and Burt's trademark change of tempo works beautifully is this song, rather than...

Werner, this is my favourite album by miles, yet no-one knows anything about it. Riverboat makes me tingle.

Any information gratefully received. Did Burt ever do this stuff in later concerts? Did the Houston Symphony Orchestra ever recover??!

Something Big, something different

Just sometimes the pretty stuff - Promises, Make It Easy, San Jose et al - gets tiresome. And so I turn to disc 3 from Something Big and there I find a collection of some quite remarkable jazz-instrumental tracks. Rarely mentioned, wholly understated. Just listen to the genuinely uplifting "An...

This strikes an earlier chord with me - I saw her at Hackney (a not-so-salubrious area of London) Empire in 2006 and it was all a bit sad. Her son sang some of the worst songs I've ever heard.

silly question 5

A teaser for all you Bacharachians out there.

Who knows of a recording, concert or occasion when Sinatra ever sang a Bacharach song?

Was it any good?

I agree.

His version of "Kissing A Fool" way outstrips that of its composer George Michael, and you should hear his band going to town after the Capt Smith & Pocahontas verse in "Fever"...

Shouldn't be a Burt song

Here's a new challenge for everyone: name a Burt song that really shouldn't be?

Perhaps one that doesn't sound like him, or just not up to scratch?

I'll nominate "Heartlight" - not a hint of Burt in there.

Yeah, but it's nothing to do with the singer; it's just the absolute sublime beauty of the song.

Andrew, so did Burt, Elvis C and Wiill Young all perform at Liverpool one night? When on earth was that?

I'm an Evertonian, and the only thing I ever went to was something called Creamfields...

"What's In Goodbye"

Burt played the Royal Albert Hall in Kensington, London in 2002 and a certain Will Young was a guest vocalist. Will was an early winner of one of those find-a-star TV shows, but to his credit has an exceptional voice. Burt wrote him a song which they premiered at that concert - What's In Goodbye - ...

could've been a Burt song....

Here's a challenge for everyone - list a song that sounds like it's a Burt song, but isn't.....?

How about this one for starters?
