Re: R.I.P. BJ Thomas

Although Thomas had charted throughout the `60s, his albums never really took off. I thought that might change with his `72 release, Billy Joe Thomas. It included songs written and accompanied by the likes of Jimmy Webb, Mann & Weill et. al. It`s still a "hidden gem" by an under-apprec...

Another Story That Won`t Die

It still seems to be accepted by the few who care that the singer on "Saturday Sunshine" was Jay North - known to those of us at a certain stage of chronological advancement as Dennis the Menace. I read some years back that it was, in fact, a twelve year old girl. Has anyone - for the sole...

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

Paul, I had that album as an import. As you doubtless know, the first few Beatles and Stones releases differed in their UK and US forms. I was never sure why. There was no exact corollary here to Beatles For Sale but I always liked it.

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

I seem to recall reading somewhere that "Promise Her Anything" was given that guitar riff as a wink at the Beatles` "Daytripper." Maybe a bit of a stretch but plausible, I guess.

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

I don`t know - "My Little Red Book" and "Promise Her Anything" were, at least, rock-ish as was (for its time) "Another Night."
But, no, Burt and Hal were not known for their contribution to rock history.

Re: Story Behind the Song: Raindrops Keep Fallin'

Although only a third or so of the above 22 songs were released as singles, it is true that none were the "chart-toppers" that earlier releases were. When Burt began having serious commercial successes again (with Carole Bayer-Sager), the songs were often so melodically dull and repetitiou...

Re: Story Behind the Song: Raindrops Keep Fallin'

Paul, you seem to be right and it`s inexplicable to me. Given the success of the remakes you mentioned, it`s baffling that the next two Dionne releases bombed. I loved "Who Gets the Guy" and was stunned when it stalled on the charts. (I`m told that it wasn`t even released in the UK). Burt ...

Re: Story Behind the Song: Raindrops Keep Fallin'

And, again, the Bob "Dylan" story that just won`t die.
Can someone ask Burt once and for all if, at any time, he had Mr. Zimmerman in mind for this song?

Re: R.I.P. Chick Corea

Even while recording "fusion" with Miles, Chick Corea made some beautiful acoustic albums for various indie labels. The Circle and related recordings were a career peak, IMO. The later electric stuff didn`t cut it with me, but that`s just a matter of taste. He recorded a live concert of du...

Re: Finally, Warwick among 16 Nominees

Certainly, Dionne deserves recognition for her accomplishments and contribution to popular music. No one disputes that. I just wonder why inclusion in this roster of names constitutes a particular honor, the R&RHOF consisting as it does of virtually anyone and everyone who was influential and/or...

Re: Two more Bacharach & Tashian songs

Okay, but how many times are these guys going to try to sell us the same album with a couple of extra tracks tacked on?
I think this well is dry.

Re: Hiromi Live Stream New Year`s Eve

I`m not sure why this topic is still receiving hits. I hope those who saw her performance enjoyed it. I was pleased to see her wearing her trademark sneakers and not masked. (I streamed a New York show by Trio 3 - Plus One a while back and all four musicians were masked - in an empty club). Hiromi i...

Re: Hiromi Live Stream New Year`s Eve

Minor correction to the above:
Your access code will only allow for one concurrent stream i.e. You can either watch it live or stream it on demand once the following day...not both.
(Makes no sense to me, either but I wasn`t consulted).

Hiromi Live Stream New Year`s Eve

The great jazz pianist Hiromi is performing a benefit for the NYC Blue Note from its counterpart in Tokyo starting at 11:00pm EST December 31 (adjust your time accordingly). There`s an encouragement to make a donation to the club, but you can stream the performance live and/or watch it all the next ...
