Re: Cilla

[quote="blueonblue"]"That little bit of magic....." Yes Blue, that truly is remarkable footage and I never tire of watching it. We've heard many artists tell of what is was like to work with Bacharach in the recording studio during the 60s but it is something else entirely actual...

Re: Cilla

Bacharach is played by one Daniel Pirrie, of whom I knew nothing until I googled him. Apparently he was in ITV's 'Downton Abbey'. You'll see him as Bacharach near the end of above promo saying, "Yeah, I think we got a good take" to which 'Cilla' replies, "We had one two hours ago"...

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

About a year after he produced Cilla Black's record of the song George Martin recorded a wonderfully lush orchestral version of 'Alfie'. Sadly it's not on Youtube. Anyone else here familiar with it?

Re: B&D BBC Radio tribute

A lot of the stuff re complex time signatures and chord progressions was lifted virtually word for word from the liner notes of 'The Look of Love' boxset from 1998. However, it sounded impressive coming from Barry Manilow and it's just a shame that it was followed immediately by, wait for it, Perry ...

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

I've never seen or heard Dionne do this song complete in concert before. It was an international hit for her in '64, although it should have been much bigger in my opinion.

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

One of the more unusual songs/records from Bacharach & David's mid-60s heyday and it's gradually become a real favorite of mine. A stunning Bacharach arrangement and listen to those glacial guitar chords toward the end.

Re: Bacharach on Marian MacPartland's Piano Jazz

Barney Kessel's 'Alfie' is sublime, a real find. Thanks. Equally sublime in my view is Earl Klugh's 'The April Fools'.

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

Thanks Blair for the video of Randy Crawford singing 'People Alone', a recording I've only heard once or twice before. Here's the same lovely lady giving a very moving performance of a great song by Joe Sample and Will Jennings, a huge hit in Europe and which made her a household name in the UK. The...

Re: Bacharach on Marian MacPartland's Piano Jazz

Nice to hear the show again, thanks.

Here's one of the true giants of jazz piano playing Bacharach in his own inimitable style.

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

I remember Jimmy Webb waxing lyrical on his BBC radio series a few years ago about Little Anthony and the Imperials 'Going Out of My Head', saying how he used it as a benchmark in both songwriting and arranging when he started out. Its influence is definitely all over this song he wrote and arranged...

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

Thanks Paul and Blue for the 'Captives of the Heart' videos - the chord sequence to the song's chorus is a real beauty. I recall there being a Jobim medley on Dionne's 'Brasil' album, including a snippet of this gem. Talking of harmonic changes, they don't get much more mesmeric than this: https://w...

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

A shame the audio test version of 'Captives of the Heart' video has been withdrawn. Here's the recording found on Dionne Warwick's 'Aquarela Do Brasil' album and I think it's by far and away the best thing that she did with Bacharach after their mid-80s reunion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNP9i...

Re: BB at the Festval Hall, London

Yes, in many ways it was the most enjoyable Bacharach concert I've ever attended because of the sheer breadth of the material played. It was certainly the longest concert I've seen him give featuring an orchestra, allowing space for all the lesser known songs and all but three or four of the major h...

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

An interesting documentary on Roberta Flack on BBC TV the other night which featured Dionne Warwick reminiscing about the first time she saw and heard her in a small club in Washington in the mid-60s and how she was “blown away” by her performance. A lot of debate on the doc about just how ‘soulful’...
