When I had a chance to talk to Burt (however briefly) in San Diego last August, he said he'd only recorded four things for the Sony UK solo project and that it was a long way from completion. In another interview (can't remember where) I think I remember reading it wouldn't be out until fall 2005 at...

Sorry, Rob. I was hoping Burt's publicist was mistaken, but I guess two consecutive summers in Italy would have been tough for Burt and the band.

PS: We're going to be on the Amalfi Coast this time next week!

I've been listening for years, but "Woman" is still one of my least favorite Bacharach albums. I'm not dismissing it entirely. I like "Futures" now whereas when I first heard it I thought it was, for lack of a better word, cheesy. As I've said before, you have to develop an ear t...

It still seems strange to me that different performers would have hits in the UK with Bacharach songs than the US performers. It's also difficult for me to keep straight in my head which version was the original or the version Burt was involved with. Of your list, "I'm A Better Man" is a g...

Thanks for the report! The love theme from Butch Cassidy he's referring to is apparently "Come Touch the Sun." There's an alternate version of it on the recent Something Big box set titled "Etta's Theme." (A vocal version titled "Where There's A Heartache" was also reco...

Thanks for the report, CC.

Can someone refresh my memory--isn't "Etta's Theme" the same as "Come Touch the Sun"? Are there any differences between the two?

Hi Walt, The short answer to your question: All the material is available and some of the albums may be available. In recent years, as you might know, Burt Bacharach Plays His Hits, Reach Out, and Make It Easy on Yourself have been reissued on CD. We've also had reissues of Casino Royale, Lost Horiz...

I just got the CD A Girl Called Eddy . Wow. Bacharachian or not, vocalist Erin Moran (not the Erin Moran from Happy Days, FYI) has a beautiful, heartbraking voice, reminiscent of Chrissie Hynde but more achingly expressive, and the songs and arrangements are gorgeous, like Elvis Costello at his most...

Jimmy Webb box set from Rhino Handmade

I just discovered a new box set of Jimmy Webb's solo albums from the 1970s, The Moon's A Harsh Mistress: Jimmy Webb in the Seventies . In some ways, it's kind of the analogue to Hip-O Select's Something Big, although I'm still waiting for Webb's The Look Of Love, a set that comprises his bigg...

I haven't heard anything new. A better person to ask than Rhino is David Nathan, who is producing the set for Rhino. I'll try to check up with him and see what the story is.

New tour dates

These just arrived from Burt's publicist. Interestingly, there is no mention of the previously reported summer dates in Italy. BURT BACHARACH CONCERT TOUR ITINERARY FOR 2005 and 2006 (as of 1/21/05) 2005 February 10-13 Las Vegas, NV Orleans Hotel and Casino Self-contained February 19 Yountville, CA ...

It's one of my favorites too, but I didn't really appreciate it until I heard Jim O'Rourke's faithful cover of it on his CD Eureka. The original version by Mark Lindsay is available on the excellent CD Reel Music. Burt's (even better) version is on both What The World Needs Now: Bacharach Classics a...
