Re: New Elvis Costello album

What a stunningly beautiful song. Apparently, `though, there wasn`t an entire second album`s worth of new collaborations: only these three and "Look Up Again" recorded as an instrumental by Herb Alpert. Too bad; "Elvis" always brings out Burt in top form and I still think that he...

Re: New Elvis Costello album

It has always been an unpleasant experience for me to listen to Declan`s voice (and can someone tell me why he chose that stupid nom-de-plume)?, but he is Burt`s best lyricist. I recall an article in the NYRB years ago speculating what Promises... would have been like if Brecht had written the lyric...

Here - again - is "He`s Given Me Things". Elvis is off key.

Re: Concert choice

If for no better reason than to be my usual contrarian self, I have to say that I have always found LeGrand`s music to be excruciatingly boring.

Re: Concert choice

Jack Jones is nearly forgotten now, but around `69 or `70 made a wonderfully weird album called L. A. Breakdown consisting of what at the time were considered to be "standards" along with three Randy Newman songs that fit in not at all: the title track, "I Think It`s Going to Rain Tod...

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

I don`t share the general reverence for Karen Carpenter`s voice, but her brother`s re-arrangement of this song actually worked:

A constant and enthusiastic presence here for many years, Vincent will be missed.
I can only add my condolences to his family.

Re: R.I.P.—Aretha Franklin

As uneven as her recording career was, her Young, Gifted and Black album is an indelible classic. There`s nothing like it to this day.

Love Story ST?

I`ve recently heard a rumor that Burt was offered the job of composing the score for the `69 tear-jerker, Love Story. Jimmy Webb submitted a score deemed "too experimental" and had it rejected and, as we know, Frances Lai ended up doing it. Can anyone confirm whether or not Burt was offere...

Re: With A Voice

I was odd-man-out during the discussions of the Some Lovers score, too. Everyone was absolutely sold on "Love Me for an Hour" while I found it forgettable. I loved the melody for "The Only Music I Understand" which prompted only discreet coughs and head-turnings among others. Oh,...

Re: With A Voice

Okay, I just listened to it again. It has a couple of nice changes but, really, I don`t hear anything special about it. (It doesn`t help, either, that it`s saddled with a quasi - "inspirational" lyric that made me think of "Wind Beneath My Wings"; I don`t know why). I think he an...

Re: With A Voice

Sorry, no.
I`ve tried to like this a few times but it still sounds to me like one of those "almosts" he wrote with Carole thirty years ago.
Any other naysayers? C`mon; don`t be shy. I`m taking all the heat.

Re: 3 new Bacharach/Costello songs on Elvis Costello album "Look Now"

I thought that I recalled a post of this from a few years ago but had forgotten the title. It`s an execrable vocal performance and I hope he used Bacharach`s arrangement for the recording, but here it is:

Re: Swing out Sister new cd

Okay, enough! I understand why the Nikki Jean track prompted a retaliation (unmelodic , I know, but I - like Burt - have always had a soft spot for city kids). Nevertheless, SOS isn`t all THAT great. Here are a couple of madeleines from the `60s for the old folks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BF4...
