Re: 1997 short Gene Pitney interview with Bob Greene
A singer who could play piano, guitar and drums, who wrote hits for others (Rubber Ball, He's A Rebel, Hello Mary Lou) and who was always an interesting and articulate interviewee. He maintained a big following in the UK years after the hits stopped and in fact was in the middle of a tour here when ...

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)
Re Burt performing What's New Pussycat on The David Frost Show, I get the impression that it probably occurred during a pre-recording or a pre-broadcast warm-up, hence Burt looking far more relaxed than he usually did when performing on TV.

Re: Trains And Boats And Planes
The general rule seemed to be that only female artists sang the bridge to Trains And Boats And Planes, although I'm sure there's been the occasional exception. You'd think a song about 'Swinging London' released in the mid-60s would catch on but I don't think that London Life was memorable enough fo...

Re: First recording of Loneliness Remembers What Happiness Forgets
I'd always assumed that Dionne Warwick was the first to record 'Loneliness Remembers What Happiness Forgets', but I've now discovered courtesy of Second-Hand Songs that a singer from New Zealand called Allison Durbin cut it a year before in 1969 for her album 'Soft And Soulful'. I can't find any in...

Re: Rhino's "Look of Love" turns 25
The part of the discussion on this thread that I have the most trouble getting my head around is that of a musical figure as legendary and iconic as Burt Bacharach being referred to as "always underrated" by US rock journalist Stephen Holden. Certainly for those of us who grew up in the U...

Re: The Bacharach Sound: 1965 TV Special
Burt wasn't joking when he stated on the show that London had become a second home to him in 1965 because apart from filming that special he also recorded his 'Hitmaker!' album here that year and then wrote and recorded the soundtrack to 'What's New Pussycat', all in between walking around Hyde Park...

Re: Katriona Taylor sings Bacharach in Barnes, SW London
I've never been to one of her gigs but Katriona Taylor has been a regular at The Bull's Head for several years now, although I believe this is the first time she's based a show on Bacharach songs. As for her famous tennis playing dad Roger, I can remember him beating Rod Laver in the fourth round of...

Re: Dionne's Upcoming Album
In listening to Dolly and Dionne's new duet "Peace Like A River" from Dionne's forthcoming album "Songs of Inspiration", I couldn't help but marvel at how good the both of their voices sounded and blended together, given that both are in their eighties! I can't imagine that Doll...

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)
When I think of The Merseybeats I remember my elder sister playing their hit 45 'I Think Of You' on her pink Dansette record player several times a day. Watching them lip-syncing and miming to the record on TV in 1964 takes me back to the time when pop groups smiled inanely at the camera no matter h...

Re: Upcoming Cherry Red 4 CD set release
However, it's curious that while 'Tower Of Strength' by Gene McDaniels is absent from this compilation, its answer record, 'You Don't Have To Be A Tower Of Strength' by Gloria Lynn, is included. An oversight on the compilers' part? Even if there was a licensing problem with the Gene McDaniels recor...

Re: Traincha Sings The Burt Bacharach Songbook Vol III
Listening to Trijnte Oosterhuis's latest release got me wondering just how many artists have recorded entire albums of Bacharach songs over the last sixty years? Concentrating exclusively on singers and excluding all the various orchestra leaders and jazz musicians who've recorded instrumental albu...

Re: Steve Allen's Music Room in 1983 with Burt, Carole & Tony Newley
I must have missed this the first time it was posted because it's completely new to me. I've heard a lot about Bacharach and Newley touring as a kind of double act back in the 1970s so I especially enjoyed the two songs they performed together. It was also interesting seeing and hearing Burt accompa...

Re: Songs of Bacharach & Costello 4-album collection in 2023
As charming and touching as Burt's recording of 'Lie Back And Think Of England' undoubtedly is I'd have been happier if both it and the song itself didn't sound so incomplete. As for 'Look Up Again' and 'Taken From Life', I think they're both excellent.

Re: Songs of Bacharach & Costello 4-album collection in 2023
That Elvis Costello is enormously proud to have collaborated with Bacharach is obvious from that video of him unveiling the box set. For inspiring Burt to write some of his best music of the past fifty years he has my upmost respect and eternal gratitude.

Re: Thanks for everything.
I'm sure we've all formed such an emotional attachment to his music that we were bound to be deeply affected by the news of his passing. When somebody of a great age dies the standard response is to say that they've had a good innings, but of course in Burt Bacharach's case the innings could never h...
