Re: Norman Gimbel R.I.P.

Gimbel's Jobim lyrics were genuinely good. And he was responsible for a surprising percentage of the music bouncing around the back of my brain, including the songs for the bizarre HR PUFNSTUF movie, the WONDER WOMAN theme, and (recorded beautifully by Dusty) "It Goes Like It Goes."

Re: Burt in Carmel-by—the-Sea

I was also lucky enough to see Miles Davis, who stuck to his famous tradition of largely ignoring the audience--and even satirized himself by introducing us to the band by facing away from us and holding up signs.

Re: Burt in Carmel-by—the-Sea

Burt still doesn't talk THAT much, to the degree you might feel like he's robbing you of music. And ultimately, the quality of the talk determines how much quantity feels right. I saw Herb Alpert and Lani Hall last year and their show had a high patter quotient, and it was very enjoyable.

Re: R.I.P. ... Vincent Cole

I’m also late to this, but I’m so sorry to hear that. My only interactions with Vincent were an exchange or two on this forum, but it was obvious he was a sweet guy and so very good at sharing his enthusiasm.

Burt in Carmel-by—the-Sea

Just went to Burt’s sold-out concert here—the eleventh time I’ve seen him, I think, and a 20th anniversary special since the first time was at the “One Amazing Night” concert. It was a joy as usual, and significantly different from the last one I attended, last year in San Francisco, with more recen...

Re: tonight, Royce Hall

My wife and I were at the San Francisco concert last night. Burt has bounced all the way back from his injury and his only reference to it was mentioning that a bad shoulder kept him from playing tennis. The music was as great as ever, and his patter between songs was maybe the most engaging and ent...

Burt's 11/11 concert in SF rescheduled for next June

He's still recovering from his broken arm. I'm sorry for myself (I have tickets) and hopeful that he's on the mend.

Bert Bacharach's book

I suspect that most of the people who read this forum are aware that Burt's father, Bert Bacharach, was a well-known columnist. I was. And for some reason, I assumed he wrote about showbiz-type stuff. But I recently stumbled across his 1970 book How to Do Almost Everything at a second-hand book sale...

Concert notes: Las Vegas, March 28, 2013

This isn't a review: when it comes to Burt Bacharach, I'm not capable of being critical. (Usually.) Suffice it to say that I had a very good time, in a beautiful concert hall -- the one-year-old Smith Center -- which was full of other people who seemed to be having a very good time. Back in the midd...

Re: New concert dates

Just got tickets to the Vegas concert -- the seventh (?) time I've seen Bacharach in concert, but the first in a long time.

Re: Hal David is gone

People always refer to "Bacharach-David," but "David-Bacharach" would be just as apt. There was never anyone else like him, before or after. What unimaginable good fortune that they found each other and worked together.

Meeting Burt

I've been to three (!) Bacharach concerts this year. At the first one, in Reno, he came out and spent considerable time with the handful of us who hung around--and, as I mentioned here, he was nice enough to autograph my iPod. At the second, in San Francisco, he actually announced from the stage he'...

Quick Dionne Question

As you probably know, Dionne Warwick was born Marie Dionne Warrick. I've often wondered: Was she named after Marie Dionne of the Dionne quintuplets, who were born in 1934 and still very much in the news when Dionne came into the world in 1940? It almost seems like she would have had to have been--to...

CONCERT REPORT: San Francisco, March 9th

My fourth Burt Bacharach concert came less than three weeks after my third, and was in some significant respects the better of the two. For one thing, the venue--San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts--was a lot nicer than the Nugget casino in Sparks, Nevada. The crowd was considerably hipper, too. And...
