Alt Version of "Pennies in a Jar"...

...with Burt`s arrangement and vocal participation. I don`t know its provenance or intent. Nor have I ever understood why Nikki Jean`s brilliant album tanked or why almost nothing has been heard from her since. Anyway:

Re: Rhino's "Look of Love" turns 25

Underlying much of the arguments regarding `60s pop is, I think, an undue generosity in bestowing the title of "songwriter" to those rank amateurs who were, first and most importantly, young narcissists who wanted to show off in front girls. While technically meeting the definition of &quo...

Re: Rhino's "Look of Love" turns 25

Well, not quite enough said. This appeared in the Boston Globe once upon a time: The Beatles are not merely awful; I would consider it sacrilegious to say anything less than that they are god awful. They are so unbelievably horribly, so appallingly unmusical, so dogmatically insensitive to the magic...

Re: Rhino's "Look of Love" turns 25

And here`s the NYRB take on the three-disc set as well as the (in my view, badly misconceived) Zorn project:

Re: 'Moon Over Wichita' (cover version)

It`s more than likely that Burt left very specific instructions pertaining to unrecorded and unreleased music. Given that none of his own albums were reissued with outtakes or "alternate" (imperfect) versions, I expect all of his scores and other material to be donated to an institution wh...

"Alfie" - Pullen and Adams

Don Pullen and George Adams were with Mingus` last band (I believe) before striking out on their own with fellow Mingus sideman, Danny Richmond, and Beaver Brown. This is not a definitive treatment of "Alfie", nor is it the quartet`s finest moment. I toss this out there in case it has slip...

OK, Here` Part of It

Carol Klein
For those who don't know and don't get the reference of our new member KleinCarol: Carol Klein is the singer-songwriter Carole King's real name. She was born Carol Joan Klein (in 1942). She took the stage name "Carole King". (She added the "e" to her first name.)

Re: Carole King article and other tributes to Bacharach

The "Carole Incident" was no longer than between seven and ten years ago, but I can`t think of a clue as to how to search for it.

Re: Carole King article and other tributes to Bacharach

I don`t recall the pseudonym she used, but another contributor linked it (in a way I`ve also forgotten) to Carole. That pseudonymous writer never posted again.

Davide,
Have Burt`s instructions regarding his unissued songs and compositions come to light?

Re: Carole King article and other tributes to Bacharach

I have always thought that Jackie was equal to Dionne as an interpreter of Burt`s work and have bored innumerable people expressing frustration that they never worked more together.

Re: New 60s Dionne songs with Burt and Hal

I`ve no doubt that this will be done, bringing us back to the problems raised by the philosophy of art forgeries. My greater concern regards the changes AI and related techno-sorcery will have wrought in us as MKUltra goes digital and global. (See Elana Freeland`s `Geoengineered Transhumanism` and i...

Re: Songs of Bacharach & Costello 4-album collection in 2023

I`m still glad that there was never a stage musical. And I don`t think that it was the "melancholic" nature of many of the songs. After all, `Carousel` was hardly a yuk-fest and `South Pacific` featured a heart-breaking tragedy. It was, I think, the relentless nature of the bummer leading ...

Re: Carole King article and other tributes to Bacharach

I seem to recall that Carole posted once or twice here under a pseudonym before being thoughtlessly outed by someone.
