Re: Another great song that sounds like Bacharach

One correction, Geoff: Laura Nyro never worked in the Brill Building and wrote songs only for herself. So many of those that appeared on her first two albums were commercially successfully covered by others causes some now to think that she was a professional "hit - maker" in the mode of C...

Re: Why Didn`t Miles Ever Record "Alfie"?

It`s too bad that Miles didn`t get a flat tire on his way to the Monterey Festival in `67. It was there he watched what he might have expected to be his next natural audience succumb to the transient seductions of psychedelia. And it was his subsequent idea to plug in first Herbie Hancock and then R...

Why Didn`t Miles Ever Record "Alfie"?

We all know the story of how Burt was flattered by Miles Davis complimenting him on the melody for "Alfie" but I find it odd that not only did Miles never record the song, I`ve never even found a bootleg of him performing it live anywhere. Despite his arguable degeneration into faux-funk a...

Re: Woman

I am ignorant of which corporate entity now owns the rights to the old A&M catalogue, but I have a couple of suggestions for whichever it is: 1. A re-issue of Woman including any unreleased instrumentals as well as the three other Bacharach / Titus songs, "Amnesia", "Chicago Farew...

Re: Woman

Woman has been my favorite album of Bacharach`s since my first hearing.
And you`re right, Marcel: it still "works."
Naturally, it tanked commercially and (equally naturally) Burt nailed it as "a failure" in consequence.

Re: New Elvis Costello album

I would certainly welcome a vocal recording by someone; but the professional popular music singer - once a prominent fixture - is now as moribund as, well, popular music that isn`t dance- or rap-rooted.
I`m not holding my breath.

Re: New Elvis Costello album

As you might imagine, I could write reams on this subject but I`ll limit myself to this for the present: We were not worldly sophisticates (politically or otherwise) in those days; we were high school and college age. You know...kids. That said, I`m pleased that, although certainly not idealistic no...

Re: New Elvis Costello album

I think that it`s damnably difficult to write a political lyric for a mainstream pop song that doesn`t alienate half the audience and overshadow its melody. Brecht made some efforts in that vein, "Solidarity" being the most successful; but even that flirted with "agit-prop." More...

Re: New Elvis Costello album

Martin, it is odd that the female singer on WATP is unknown because starting with the Futures album, Burt began listing the names of previously un-credited vocalists. While I still don`t recognize the voice of the woman in question here, it may be that she was contracted to another label and thus ne...

Re: New Elvis Costello album

I saw him In Buffalo for the first gig of his tour (sort of) promoting At This Time. He and the Buffalo Philharmonic premiered "Who Are These People?" with Pagano singing and one of the instrumentals - I`ve forgotten which. Both were promptly dropped from the subsequent repertoire. Has he ...

Re: New Elvis Costello album

The only person I know to have done a collaboration with JW is Nikki Jean who (apart from Leon Russell) also has been "Dylan"`s only collaborator. (Actually, he allowed her to complete a song he had abandoned). If you missed my flogging of this album featuring her work with Bacharach, King...

Re: New Elvis Costello album

Sara, if Burt can claim a writing credit for suggesting a single chord change to HGMT, who knows how little Carole had to contribute to "Burnt Sugar" for the same?

Re: New Elvis Costello album

I think Bacharach wasn`t mentioned primarily because the chat wasn`t about a Bacharach song. As for Carole King...well, she made some pleasant if forgettable albums in the early `70s. It`s a minor mystery why her name is kept alive by means including a cheesy B`way musical (among others) when equall...

Re: New Elvis Costello album

Thanks, Paul. I recall that lift from "...Smile." Ironically, to my ears "He`s Given Me Things" has a melody more redolent of Bacharach than "Photographs...." We can probably all agree that "Don`t Look Now" is pure Bacharach and the "keeper" of the b...
