Re: Leslie Bricusse R.I.P.

More than once last week on British radio and television I heard the phrase, "Now, you're probably not familiar with his name", prefacing a report on his death, which you would think wasn't really necessary considering the remarkably long list of famous songs he either wrote or co-wrote, but my gues...

Re: Leslie Bricusse R.I.P.

Another lovely song that Bricusse wrote on his own, Something In Your Smile from the 1967 film musical, Doctor Dolittle.

Re: Leslie Bricusse R.I.P.

Best known for his legendary songwriting partnership with Tony Newley which spawned so many great songs, Leslie Bricusse did take on a few projects on his own like the film musical 'Goodbye Mr Chips'. Here's Shirley Bassey's recording of one of the songs from that score which features a sublime arra...

Re: Some Lovers: New album of the songs from the show

Blair, all these artists were brought together by Broadway Records to record the 'Some Lovers' album and Bacharach is credited as one of the co-producers. There's thirteen tracks and so not all of the songs that were featured in the London production of 2017 are included. Here's some more informatio...

Some Lovers: New album of the songs from the show

An album of the songs that Bacharach and Steven Sater wrote for the musical Some Lovers has just been released. It features dozens of performers mostly associated with the Broadway stage and from the album here's Welcome To My World and A Thousand Things That Were You: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=...

Re: Another Rare Laura Nyro Clip

This may not be by Laura Nyro but it's certainly rare and is at least about her. I found out recently that an act called Cosmic Rough Riders had a UK Top 40 hit in 2001 with a song entitled 'Laura Nyro' and listening to it now I've discovered it's a gentle and affectionate tribute. The fact that the...

Re: Traincha Sings The Burt Bacharach Songbook Vol III

Here's Trijntje Oosterhuis with Gregory Porter and 'Making Love'. It's hard to believe that this song which Bacharach co-wrote with Carole Bayer Sager and Bruce Roberts and that was a Top 20 hit in the US for Roberta Flack is now almost forty years old:

Re: Nagging Questions Re: the Above

No, 18 minutes isn't very much from what was purported to be an hour's audition and we can only assume that it was decided by the modern day producers of the resulting album, Cheryl Pawelski and George Gilbert of The Laura Nyro Trust, that everything else that may have been recorded that day in 1966...

Laura Nyro - Go Find The Moon: The Audition Tape

The album is released today and here's the title track. One thing is for certain, Laura Nyro might have been only eighteen when this was recorded but it's already all there and it was unique to her:

Re: Be Aware

Maybe the clue as to why 'Be Aware' wasn't included on the 'Barbra Joan Streisand' album released in August 1971 was that Richard Perry was the producer and as he had nothing to do with that track he wasn't about to find room for it, not even as a bonus track.

Denise Donatelli - Whistling In The Dark: New all Bacharach album

A new album of Bacharach material by jazz singer Denise Donatelli entitled 'Whistling In The Dark' is due for release on August 27th. The most intriguing selection among the nine songs is the title track, written with and recently recorded by Daniel Tashian. Two more unusual choices are 'In The Dark...

Re: Jimmy Webb performing on TV in 1968

Jimmy Webb made a beautiful record of 'One Of The Nicer Things' released as a single at the time and which featured the kind of orchestration he would usually reserve for a Richard Harris or a 5th Dimension record. Making allowances for the limitations of his singing voice at the time, I think it's ...

Jimmy Webb performing on TV in 1968

Considering Jimmy Webb's fame as a songwriter in the late 60s I have long found it surprising that there didn't seem to be any video evidence of him appearing on American TV at the time, that is until I came across this remarkable footage taken from a show called Playboy After Dark. According to the...

Re: Another Rare Laura Nyro Clip

There seems to be a growing interest in Laura Nyro if British music magazines like Record Collector and Shindig are anything to go by. Both these publications have done big features on her in the last month or two and in fact she's on the front cover of the latest edition of Shindig. https://www.goo...
